Straight Outta Compton took in $1.34 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for the 17th time in the past 18 days. The successful F. Gary Gray directed N.W.A biopic from Universal was down 64 percent from Sunday and down a sizable 51 percent from last Monday. Straight Outta Compton continues to impress in a big way with an 18-day take of $135.36 million. That places the film a strong 45 percent ahead of the $93.47 million 18-day gross of last year's Ride Along.
Sony's War Room claimed second place with $0.965 million. The low-budget Kendrick Brothers produced faith based film from TriStar and AFFIRM Films fell a sharp 72 percent from Sunday. War Room is playing in a modest 1,135 locations, which gave the film a healthy per-location average of $850 for the day. War Room is outpacing expectations with a four-day start of $12.32 million and is running 27 percent ahead of the $9.67 million four-day take of 2011's Courageous.
Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation placed in third with $0.727 million. The fifth installment of the Tom Cruise led blockbuster franchise declined 68 percent from Sunday and just 31 percent from last Monday. Thanks in part to strong holding power throughout its run, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation has grossed a very healthy $170.97 million in 32 days. The film should hold up especially well over the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend frame.
The Weinstein Company's No Escape followed in fourth with $0.689 million. The action thriller starring Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell was down 69 percent from Sunday's performance. No Escape has grossed $10.86 million in six days. That is in line with the film's modest expectations and places the film 8 percent behind the $11.80 million six-day start of last year's The November Man (which had the added advantage of opening over Labor Day weekend).
Meanwhile, We Are Your Friends continued to under-perform in a big way with a daily take of just $203,893. The low budget Zac Efron led drama from Warner Bros. was down 52 percent from Sunday and placed in thirteenth for the day. We Are Your Friends has grossed an anemic $1.97 million in four days and will obviously fade away from theatres very quickly.
