'The Martian' Leads on Columbus Day with $4.90M; 'Hotel Transylvania 2' a Strong Second with $3.81M; 'Pan' Remains Soft in Third with $2.00MOctober 13, 2015 12:51 PM

by Daniel Garris

Fox's The Martian grossed $4.90 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for an eleventh consecutive day. The critically acclaimed Ridley Scott directed 3D sci-fi film starring Matt Damon was down 53 percent from Sunday and up 11 percent over last Monday thanks in part to the Columbus Day holiday and the Thanksgiving Day holiday in Canada. The Martian continues to impress with an eleven-day take of $113.62 million. The film is currently running 15 percent ahead of the $99.09 million last year's Interstellar had grossed after eleven days of wide release and 12 percent behind the $128.52 million eleven-day take of 2013's Gravity.

Sony's Hotel Transylvania 2 placed in second with $3.81 million. The Adam Sandler led 3D computer animated film from Sony Pictures Animation was down just 39 percent from Sunday and up 173 percent over last Monday. Columbus Day is traditionally a strong day at the box office for family fare and that was certainly the case for Hotel Transylvania 2 yesterday. Hotel Transylvania 2 has grossed $120.75 million in 18 days, which places the film an impressive 17 percent ahead of the $102.96 million 18-day gross of 2012's Hotel Transylvania.

Pan took third place for the day with $2.00 million.  Warner's pricey 3D adventure fantasy starring Hugh Jackman fell 52 percent from Sunday's performance, which suggests that the film isn't skewing all that heavily towards family audiences. Pan continues to perform below its already held in check expectations and poorly with its expensive price tag in mind. The film has grossed just $17.32 million in four days, which places it a disappointing 44 percent behind the $30.73 million four-day start of 2011's Real Steel.

Fellow Warner Bros. release The Intern followed in fourth with $1.14 million. The Nancy Meyers directed comedy starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway decreased 50 percent from Sunday and increased 21 percent from last Monday. The Intern surpassed the $50 million mark yesterday and has grossed a healthy $50.73 million in 18 days. That places the film 7.5 percent ahead of the $47.21 million 18-day take of 2013's Last Vegas.

Lionsgate's Sicario rounded out Monday's top five with $1.04 million. The critically acclaimed crime thriller starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin fell 54 percent from Sunday and 2 percent from last Monday. That represented one of the day's poorer daily holds among wide releases. Sicario has grossed a solid $27.97 million through 25 days of release.

Sony's The Walk continued to under-perform in a big way with a seventh place take of just $0.531 million. The critically acclaimed 3D Robert Zemeckis directed film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt declined 48 percent from Sunday. Despite strong critical reviews, The Walk hasn't been able to catch on with moviegoers and has managed to gross only $6.96 million in thirteen days.

On the other end of the box office spectrum, Universal's Steve Jobs continued to excel in platform release with $67,991 from 4 locations in New York and Los Angeles. That gave the Danny Boyle directed drama starring Michael Fassbender an exceptional per-location average of $16,998 for the day. The four-day total for Steve Jobs stands at $589,513. Steve Jobs will be playing in an estimated 60 locations this coming weekend and will expand into wide release on October 23rd.
