'Mockingjay – Part 2' Remains #1 on Thanksgiving with $10.4M; 'The Good Dinosaur' ($6.56M) Barely Stays Ahead of 'Creed' ($6.46M) for Second; 'Victor Frankenstein' Lifeless with $0.47MNovember 27, 2015 12:05 PM

Please note that because of the holiday weekend, today's figures are a mix of estimates and actual grosses.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 took in an estimated $10.4 million on Thanksgiving Day to lead the daily box office for a seventh consecutive day. The final chapter of the young adult blockbuster franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence declined a sizable 24 percent from Wednesday's performance. In comparison, last year's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 fell 24 percent on Thanksgiving Day as well to gross $11.08 million. Mockingjay - Part 2 has grossed $146.71 million through its first week of release. That is less than expected and places the film 13 percent below the $168.71 million seven-day start of Mockingjay - Part 1. At the same time, with a two-day take of $24.15 million on Wednesday and Thursday, Mockingjay Part 2 will easily be the top film over the extended holiday frame with a five-day take of roughly $75 million to $79 million.

The Good Dinosaur held steady in second place with an estimated $6.56 million. The 3D computer animated film from Disney and Pixar was down a sharp 33 percent from Wednesday. It should be noted that it is commonplace for animated films to experience sizable declines on Thanksgiving Day, before rebounding in a big way on Black Friday. Back in 2010, Tangled fell 32 percent on Thanksgiving Day to gross $8.07 million. With a two-day take of $16.37 million, The Good Dinosaur is running 18 percent behind the $19.93 million two-day start of Tangled. If The Good Dinosaur continues to maintain a similar pace over the weekend, it would be headed for a five-day start in the neighborhood of $55 million to $59 million. That would be below expectations and relatively soft by Pixar's lofty standards. The Good Dinosaur received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.

Warner and MGM's Creed took in an estimated $6.46 million to remain in third. The critically acclaimed seventh installment of the Rocky franchise was up a healthy 8 percent over Wednesday's opening day performance. Creed is performing on the high end of pre-release expectations with a two-day start of $12.48 million. That places the film a healthy 29 percent ahead of the $9.69 million two-day take of Rocky Balboa, which opened on a Wednesday just before Christmas back in 2006. At its current pace, Creed appears headed for a five-day launch in the area of $37 million to $41 million. In a month full of wide releases that have failed to live up to expectations, it is already looking like Creed will be a much needed exception to that trend. Like The Good Dinosaur, Creed also received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.

Spectre claimed fourth place with an estimated $2.67 million. The latest installment of Sony and MGM's James Bond franchise was essentially unchanged from Wednesday. Spectre placed in second for the week with a weekly take of $24.15 million. That represented a 45 percent decline from the previous week and brings the film's three-week total to $163.25 million.

Fellow Sony release The Night Before was up one spot from Wednesday to round out Thursday's top four with an estimated $1.68 million. The R-rated comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie was down 1 percent from Wednesday. The Night Before placed in fifth for the week with $15.93 million. While that was below expectations, The Night Before is showing early signs of having a lengthy run going forward.

The Peanuts Movie took sixth place with an estimated $1.44 million. The 3D computer animated adaptation from Fox and Blue Sky was down a very sharp 42 percent from Wednesday, but like The Good Dinosaur, should rebound in a big way today. The Peanuts Movie took third place this week with $20.92 million. The film was down 25 percent from the previous frame and has grossed $107.06 million in three weeks.

Meanwhile, fellow Fox release Victor Frankenstein remained absolutely lifeless on Thursday with an estimated twelfth place take of $470,000. The horror film starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy was down 23 percent from Wednesday, which represents a very troubling Thanksgiving Day hold for a film aimed at adult audiences. Victor Frankenstein is on course to become one of the year's poorest performers with a two-day start of only $1.08 million. The film received a soft C rating on CinemaScore.
