'Focus' Scores $24.55M in Its First Week of ReleaseMarch 06, 2015 01:23 PM

Warner's Focus grossed $1.20 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a seventh consecutive day. The romantic heist film starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie was down 6 percent from Wednesday and likely took a bit of a hit from losing IMAX screens to Sony's CHAPPiE on Thursday night. While it performed a bit below pre-release expectations, Focus was the week's top film with a seven-day start of $24.55 million. That was a lackluster 31 percent softer than the $35.39 million seven-day take of 2013's After Earth.

Fox's Kingsman: The Secret Service held steady in second place with $0.902 million. The Matthew Vaughn directed graphic novel adaptation starring Colin Firth was up 2 percent over Wednesday and down a solid 34 percent from last Thursday. Kingsman placed in second for the week with $15.78 million. That represented a 35 percent decline from the previous frame and brings the film's three-week total to a stronger than expected $89.73 million.

Fifty Shades of Grey took in $0.795 million to remain in third. Universal's successful erotic romantic drama was down 2 percent from Wednesday and down a sharp 56 percent from last Thursday. Fifty Shades of Grey finished in third for the week with $14.01 million. The film was down 53 percent from last week and has grossed a strong $150.84 million in three weeks of release.

Disney's McFarland, USA was up one spot and a healthy 25 percent over Wednesday to move into fourth on Thursday with $0.542 million. The well received sports drama starring Kevin Costner placed in sixth for the week with $9.92 million. That was down just 30 percent from the film's opening week performance and brings the film's two-week total to a very solid $24.11 million.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was up one spot and 13 percent over Wednesday to round out Thursday's top five with $0.488 million. Paramount's successful 3D animated film took fourth place for the week with $12.87 million. The SpongeBob Movie was down a healthy 34 percent from last week and continues to exceed expectations with $141.99 million in four weeks.

The Lazarus Effect was down two spots from Wednesday to land in sixth with $0.465 million. The low-budget PG-13 rated horror film from Relativity increased 4 percent over Wednesday. The Lazarus Effect placed in fifth for the week with a seven-day start of $12.30 million. That was slightly below expectations and places the film 23 percent behind the $15.99 million seven-day take of last year's Oculus.

Warner's American Sniper placed in seventh with $0.457 million. The blockbuster Clint Eastwood directed film placed in seventh for the week with $9.29 million. American Sniper has grossed a massive $332.69 million, which leaves the film just $4.10 million away from surpassing the $336.79 million current gross of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 to become the highest grossing release of 2014 domestically.
