'The Martian' Zooms Past $70M Mark After Leading Thursday with $3.80M; 'Hotel Transylvania 2' Approaching $100M Mark After $1.30M Daily TakeOctober 09, 2015 01:18 PM

Fox's The Martian rounded out its first week of release with a first place take of $3.80 million on Thursday. In the process, the critically acclaimed Ridley Scott directed 3D sci-fi film starring Matt Damon surpassed the $70 million mark yesterday. The Martian was up a solid 2 percent over Wednesday's performance. The Martian was the week's top film with a healthy seven-day start of $71.71 million. The film is currently running 4.5 percent ahead of the $68.62 million last year's Interstellar had grossed after seven days of wide release and 9 percent behind the $79.13 million seven-day take of 2013's Gravity.

Sony's Hotel Transylvania 2 held steady in second place with $1.30 million. The Adam Sandler led 3D computer animated film from Sony Pictures Animation was up 5 percent over Wednesday and down just 27 percent from last Thursday. Hotel Transylvania 2 placed in second for the week with $38.98 million. That represented a 32 percent decline from the film's opening week performance and brings the film's two-week total to an impressive $96.52 million. Hotel Transylvania 2 is running 14 percent ahead of the $84.89 million two-week take of 2012's Hotel Transylvania.

The Intern took in $1.04 million to remain in third. The Warner Bros. comedy starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway was up a healthy 5 percent over Wednesday and down 33 percent from last Thursday. The Intern took fourth place for the week with $16.01 million. That represented a 36 percent fall from last week and places the film's two-week haul at $40.91 million. The Intern is running 7 percent ahead of the $38.09 million two-week take of 2013's Last Vegas.

Lionsgate's Sicario continued to claim fourth place with $0.917 million. The critically acclaimed crime thriller starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin was down a slim 1 percent from Wednesday. Sicario placed in third for the week with $16.35 million, which was in line with expectations.  With the addition of two weeks of platform release, the three-week total for Sicario stands at a promising $19.36 million.
