Fox's The Martian grossed $5.46 million on Tuesday to claim first place at the daily box office for a fifth straight day. The critically acclaimed Ridley Scott directed 3D sci-fi film starring Matt Damon was up a solid 24 percent over Monday. The Martian surpassed the $60 million mark yesterday and continues to perform towards the higher end of its lofty pre-release expectations with a five-day start of $64.17 million. The film is currently running 4 percent ahead of the $61.84 million last year's Interstellar had grossed after five days of wide release and 6 percent behind the $68.45 million five-day take of 2013's Gravity. Both comparisons are made even more impressive for The Martian when taking into account that unlike Interstellar and Gravity, The Martian hasn't received an added boost from higher priced IMAX admissions.

Sony's Hotel Transylvania 2 took in $1.85 million to remain in second. The Adam Sandler led 3D computer animated film from Sony Pictures Animation was up 32.5 percent over Monday and down 38 percent from last Tuesday. Hotel Transylvania 2 has grossed a stronger than expected $93.98 million through twelve days of release. That places the film an impressive 14 percent ahead of the $82.76 million twelve-day gross of 2012's Hotel Transylvania.

The Intern was up one spot and a strong 44 percent over Monday to claim third on Tuesday with $1.36 million. The Warner Bros. comedy starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway was down 44 percent from last Tuesday. The Intern has grossed $38.89 million in twelve days. That is on the high end of expectations and places the film 7.5 percent ahead of the $36.18 million twelve-day take of 2013's Last Vegas.

Lionsgate's Sicario fell one spot to land in fourth place with $1.31 million. The critically acclaimed crime thriller starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin was up 25 percent over Monday's performance. The 19-day total for Sicario stands at a promising $17.52 million. Sicario will have a very good chance of holding up well going forward thanks in part to strong critical reviews and strong early word of mouth.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials rounded out the day's top five with $0.646 million. The young adult sequel from Fox was up 36 percent over Monday and down 47 percent from last Tuesday. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials has grossed a softer than expected $64.52 million in 19 days. That places the film 14 percent behind the $75.03 million 19-day gross of last year's The Maze Runner.
