CineAsia 2012: Marvel and Pixar Films Dominate Disney Presentation
December 11, 2012
Disney's CineAsia presentation was dominated by footage from upcoming Marvel and Pixar films.
It's clear that the Mouse House is very proud of its relationship with both content producers. Coming off the $1.5 billion worldwide--a figure that was drilled home numerous times during the presentation--success of The Avengers, expectations are high for 2013's Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Reactions were positive to new clips from Iron Man 3 and Thor 2. Iron Man 3 in particular should do well in China now that shooting is about to begin in that country.
A lot of time was devoted to Monsters, Inc. 3D and Monsters University. MU hits theaters on June 21, 2013, and it should appeal to adults and teens as much as it does to young children. The original Monsters, Inc. took in a staggering $523.4 million worldwide back in 2001.
Keep a very close eye on Pixar's Planes. The footage that was shown makes it clear that Disney is positioning it to be an international juggernaut like Car 2. It should also generate plenty of merchandising just like the Cars franchise. Planes opens internationally in August/September 2013.
CineAsia attendees were also treated to a look at Tom Hanks in character as Walt Disney himself in Saving Mr. Banks, a film about the making of Mary Poppins. Oscar bait, anyone?
