Cinedigm to Release Theatrically Following World Premiere Live Symphony Event at 2013 Toronto International Film Festival
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 22, 2013)- Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM) has acquired all North American distribution rights to "VISITORS," the new film from director Godfrey Reggio, composer Philip Glass and filmmaker Jon Kane. Seven years in the making, VISITORS is the fourth film that Reggio and Glass have collaborated on following the groundbreaking, internationally acclaimed, Qatsi Trilogy formed by the films Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi. Cinedigm plans to release VISITORS theatrically in 4K throughout Fall 2013 following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival where members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra will perform Glass's score live.
"VISITORS is truly a mind-altering one-of-a-kind cinema event. What Godfrey, Philip and Jon have created is wholly unique and all of us at Cinedigm are thrilled to partner with them and Steven Soderbergh to bring their vision to audiences everywhere," said Cinedigm Co-President Susan Margolin.
Of the acquisition Reggio stated, "For a world on speed, in rush hour, this film is counter-intuitive to contemporary image-making. Face-to-face with more to say then can be spoken, one might leave expectations at the door. Cinedigm's enthusiasm for theatrical release and its commitment to innovative marketing and exhibition, offers this odd-one-in an opportunity to seek a life of its own. I can only feel anxious joy as I prepare to see this child take its first step."
"I'm thrilled and honored to act as presenter of VISITORS, which is the definition of a must-see event for anyone who loves cinema. Thirty years after Koyaanisqatsi, Godfrey Reggio--with the support of Philip Glass and Jon Kane--once again leapfrogs over us earth-bound filmmakers and creates another stunning, wordless portrait of modern life. It's a bold, beautiful, uniquely moving cinematic experience," added Soderbergh.
Presented in Black and White digital 4K projection, VISITORS reveals humanity's trancelike relationship with technology, which, when commandeered by extreme emotional states, produces massive effects far beyond the human species. The film is visceral, offering the audience an experience beyond information about the moment in which we live. Comprised of only seventy-four shots, VISITORS takes viewers on a journey to the moon and back to confront them with themselves.
The deal was negotiated by Cinedigm's Director of Acquisitions Emily Rothschild with Larry Taub representing the filmmakers.
