Saturday Update: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children opened atop the box office on Friday with an estimated $9.0 million. That comes in 22.5 percent higher than the $7.35 million first day of Goosebumps last October, and just 7 percent shy of Alice Through the Looking Glass ($9.7 million) this past May. The Tim Burton adaptation is the latest young adult novel to hit the big screen, with the added advantage of targeting family audiences. That latter fact could help it hold up better throughout the weekend than most YA adaptations, although Burton’s fan base may counter that boost. Boxoffice is projecting a healthy $27 million opening weekend in first place.
Debuting in the runner-up spot yesterday was Deepwater Horizon with $7.08 million. Early reviews and word of mouth are noticeably strong, which could help the film play well over the weekend and beyond. By comparison, opening day came in 17 percent behind 2013’s Captain Phillips ($8.5 million). We’re expecting around a $20 million three-day haul.
Meanwhile, The Magnificent Seven added $4.635 million yesterday to begin its sophomore frame. With $50.54 million in the bank through eight days of play, the picture is running 1 percent behind the pace of 2014’s The Equalizer. Look for a $15.5 million second frame tally.
Storks and Sully rounded out the top five with $3.1 million and $2.485 million, respectively. The latter of the two will cross the $100 million domestic threshold on Saturday.
Last but not least, Masterminds debuted to a disappointing $2.325 million on Friday as it aims for a $6.3 million opening weekend; Disney’s The Queen of Katwe earned $707,000 in a limited expansion to 1,242 theaters as it heads toward $2.5 million this weekend; and, in limited release, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story bowed to $387,000 on its way to a $1.4 million debut weekend.

Friday Report: Fox’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children rang up an estimated $1.2 million from Thursday night’s opening shows, marking a strong start for the Tim Burton adaptation as it hopes to reel in both fans and families over the weekend. By comparison, that figure fell just shy of Alice Through the Looking Glass ($1.5 million) — which benefited from being a sequel — while topping the $1.1 million haul of 2014’s The Maze Runner and Goosebumps‘ $600,000 last year.
Meanwhile, Deepwater Horizon started with $860,000 last night. That’s a modest start for the film compared to the likes of Sully ($1.35 million), Fury ($1.2 million), and Lone Survivor ($1.5 million) — but it does top the $600,000 of 2013’s Captain Phillips. The film’s positive reviews and Mark Wahlberg’s drawing power could improve the film’s outlook over the weekend.
Masterminds also debuts this weekend, but no early grosses were reported at the time of publishing. Boxoffice’s final forecast on Wednesday called for an opening weekend around $6 million.
In the meantime, The Magnificent Seven should hold relatively well this weekend, but it will be facing off with Deepwater Horizon in a battle for second place.
