Twitter Futures: ‘Finding Dory’ Stretches its Legs

Friday Morning Update: The second trailer for Finding Dory saw it leading the upcoming films on Twitter over the past week as it racked up 114,628 tweets. The trailer itself generated a cool 65,498 tweets on Tuesday, and though it was down quite a ways from its first trailer (179,917 tweets back on March 2nd), it just further cements it as the event animated movie of the Summer. To slice it another way, over the past 18 months only one animated film has managed to lead all upcoming movies on Twitter over two seperate Friday to Thursday periods and that was Minions last SummerThe film is capitalizing on the mountain of positive buzz Finding Nemo created way back in 2003 and based on the hugely successful social media campaign so far it has a lot to look forward to.

Taking second place for the third week in a row was Ghostbusters with 92,628 tweets. The film has haters in every corner who are quick to pull out their crystal balls and point out how horrible its reviews are going to be and draw comparisons to recent failed reboots such as last summer’s The Fantastic Four. So let’s look at Fantastic Four up close as a comparison. In the three months leading up to its release Fantastic Four did not have a single week above 100,000 tweets and only one week above 50,000 tweets. By comparison, over the last three months alone Ghostbusters has had three weeks over 100,000 tweets (one of those was over 250,000), and five weeks above 50,000 tweets. Yes that is just raw numbers and much of that buzz has been crying it down, but the point remains that awareness is through the roof comparatively which is a good thing to start with.

Speaking of huge buzz, Suicide Squad continued its run of top 5 finishes to 7 weeks and top 10 to 20 weeks with its 68,893 tweets.

Star Trek Beyond came in from the cold and cracked the top 15 for the first time since its first trailer dropped in December of 2015. Its second trailer was the reason behind the surge but it will likely fade away in the coming weeks until the TV campaign stars up in earnest.

Rounding out the top 5 was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows which surfed their way up to 32,021 tweets on the week. By comparison, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had 27,587 tweets the same distance prior to release back in 2014.
