Saturday Morning Update: A new TV spot for Doctor Strange helped it to reach 77,025 tweets on the week and lead all tracked upcoming films. The trailer revealed more about the film’s premise and offered clues as to how it will tie into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) which was clearly well-received by fans of the franchise. The best comparison for the film will likely be Ant-Man which had less than 30,000 tweets the same distance before its release. Many pundits predicted that Doctor Strange would be a misstep for the MCU since he is unlike any other hero focused on in prior films and that the mystic elements of his storylines would not translate well to North American audiences. However, with these social media numbers it looks like a sure bet so far to at lest match Ant-Man‘s numbers ($520 million worldwide) which would no doubt be a big win for all involved. There is no stopping Disney and Marvel it would seem and with the Star Wars franchise also going bananas Disney is sitting on years of bankable sequels/prequels and worthwhile adaptations for both properties.
Though its release is 9 months away the trailers/teasers for Wonder Woman keep coming. This time a 60 second TV spot hit the web and gave the film a big shot in the arm at the end of the week, rising to almost 70,000 tweets. There is still a lot of unrealised potential in the DC Universe film franchise, and while Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad both managed impressive totals, word of mouth was not phenomenal (neither were its reviews). Wonder Woman no doubt hopes to turn that around and learn from its predecessor’s mistakes and on paper it has a chance to become a massive opening success. Superhero movies have thrived with males of all ages as its core demographic, Wonder Woman on the other hand is the most recognisable female super hero and will likely see record turnouts (by percentage audience at least) for women of all ages. That is undoubtedly a recipe for box office gold and if Warner Bros. can mount a marketing campaign similar to the masterpiece that was Suicide Squad and produce a quality movie this could surprise and be a massive success.
