Facebook Watch – ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ Takes Over

Monday Afternoon Update: After releasing its second trailer last week Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children shot to the top of the Facebook charts with a very impressive 145,384 new likes. The comparison that springs most to mind here is Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them which rose a very similar 140,000+ new likes after its last trailer. It is true that Fantastic Beasts does have over 1 million likes and opens over six weeks later but considering the massive boost it has no doubt gotten from Harry Potter fans (in case you aren’t aware it’s a spin-off/prequel series for the Potter Wizard-verse), I’d say that Miss Peregrine and its 372,717 likes has done remarkably well for a net new film property.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back also saw a big jump this past week as it rose 40% to 362,781 tweets thanks to a new trailer. What makes that number even more impressive is that the film is re-using the Facebook page of the first film, yet it managed a 40% jump in traffic with the trailer. The film had gained ~1,000 new likes since April so this past week was simply gigantic. First-time out the film had a very muted social media footprint leading up to release but word of mouth was strong and the holiday season’s legs helped it to reach a very respectable $80 million domestically to match its $130 million in international ticket sales. It would seem as though that strong word of mouth is paying dividends now and greatly raising the profile of the sequel. I would also infer by this jump that a wider demographic took note of this trailer and its prospective audience would have grown significantly between instalments. By comparison, the Jason Bourne trailer back in April drove 104,000 new Facebook likes in the week after its release. Yes, like Fantastic Beasts above Bourne has way more total likes (2.3 million) but this is still a very good sign for Reacher’s potential and I think its safe to say that this one definitely won’t be opening to only $15 million again.

Lastly, Light’s Out released a new trailer as well this past week which saw it shoot to third place on the week and the biggest jump in the top ten of 193%. This was the first time many had heard of the film since it had ~40k likes less than two months to release at the start of the week but the infusion of interest definitely gave its potential a huge shot in the arm. Though its 135k total likes seems insignificant, considering that it is already more than The ForestThe Boy and The Darkness on the eve of their respective releases its safe to say that it has a good chance of standing out this July.
