Monday Afternoon Update: With Finding Nemo falling off the list this week thanks to its impending opening in four days that paved the way for another anticipated animated film to rule: The Secret Life Of Pets. Its 66,350 new likes last week gave it the lead amongst all tracked upcoming films over this past week, bringing its total to a hefty 1,774,446. Considering that this is a net new offering that is a head-turner, especially when you consider that Zootopia had less than 200,000 likes the same distance before release. The like total hints at older audiences connecting more with Secret Life which should help it to reach a wider demographic. The only flip-side perhaps is that cute animal clips and videos are hugely popular in general on social media which will no doubt inflate its numbers across the board.
The Shallows had another strong week as its marketing kicks it up a notch, rising 62,284 likes to 392,777 overall. This is a very sturdy number considering that the film could potentially see a four quadrant appeal thanks to both Blake Lively and her co-star the Great White Shark attracting both women and men alike. Despite the massive success of the Jaws franchise, feature films focused on sharks have not been that prevalent with just a handful being released in the 30 years since. The fascination with sharks continues however, with Discovery’s Shark Week growing in popularity every year and the cult classic Sharknado spawning three sequels all bearing witness to. The signs are all there for a profitable run for The Shallows.
The biggest mover on the week was Moana, yet another Disney animated feature film which rose close to 35% on the week. News surfaced this past week on its trailer and poster which brought it into the spotlight. Way early to be reading much into its numbers but by comparison Zootopia only had ~30,000 likes so this is definitely a positive start.
