‘Minions’ Conquer The Global Box Office; ‘Terminator: Genisys’ Sees Bump From Major Expansion; ‘Jurassic World’ Just A Step Away From $1.5 Billion

The Minions conquered the North American box office this weekend, claiming $115.2 million from 4,301 theaters and a $26,875 average per theater. The overseas results proved to be similarly impressive, contributing $124.3 million from 56 territories and takings its overseas cume to $280.5 million. Minions placed #1 in 29 of the 30 territories where it opened this weekend. Minions is now the biggest animated opener of all time in France, Hungary, Russia, Serbia/Montenegro, South Africa, Ukraine, Chile, Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam

Mexico led this weekend’s openers with $19.7 million and 79% of the market share, making it the second biggest opening weekend of all time for any film in Mexico. Russia claimed the top spot with $14.3 million and 73% of the market share, claiming the top opening of all time in admissions and second biggest opening weekend in gross behind Furious 7. France opened to $12.1 million, the biggest debut in the country since 2012. Venezuela made $5.6 million, setting the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time in the country.

Minions has grossed a total of $395.7 million worldwide as it prepares to launch in 11 additional territories over the next couple of months. Next weekend will bring the United Arab Emirates and the rest of the Middle East markets.

Terminator: Genisys expanded to 14 markets this weekend, including Japan, Germany, Spain, Italy and Argentina. The new countries helped add $47.3 million from a total of 60 territories, bringing the film’s overseas cume up to $156.1 million.

Japan led all the new openers with $5.4 million form 339 locations. Germany enjoyed a #2 debut with a $3.1 million take form 554 sites. Argentina took $2.3 million from 157 cinemas, while Spain opened to $1.4 million at 373 locations. Italy was the only major market to enjoy a #1 debut over the weekend, grossing $1.2 million from 530 cinemas.

South Korea led the holdovers with $5.1 million from 775 cinemas in its second frame, finishing #2 in the market after a 54% slide from its debut. The film has now grossed a total of $19 million in the market. Russia’s sophomore frame yielded $3.8 million from 1,121 locations, a 70% slide from its debut that brings the market total to $19.1 million. The UK grossed $2.7 million from 541 cinemas, a 43% drop from its opening weekend, to bring the cume to $11.5 million. Other top holds include Brazil ($2.7M from 485 sites, -25%, $8.1M cume), Australia ($2.2M from 260 cinemas, -40%, $8M cume), France ($1.9M from 713 locations, -52%, $6.9M cume), and Mexico ($1.6M from 673 sites, -67%, $9.7M cume).

Terminator: Genisys has grossed $224.8 million worldwide.

Jurassic World bit off $21.7 million from 65 markets, takings its overseas cume up to $875.2 million. The film has now grossed a whopping $1.466 billion worldwide, making it the fifth highest grossing film of all time globally. Jurassic World ranks seventh in terms of highest grossing films overseas. The next and final market for the dinosaurs is Japan, scheduled for August 5.

Inside Out grossed $19.1 million from 44 territories in its fourth weekend overseas. The animated film is now reporting a $151.8 million overseas cume from only 48% of the international marketplace. South Korea brought in $5.1 million in its debut, the biggest Pixar opening of all time in the market. The film continues to show strong legs in holdover markets; top performers include Mexico ($27.7M), Australia ($18.9M), Russia ($18.3M), and France ($16M).

Inside Out has grossed a total of $435.4 million worldwide and will open in Spain, Japan, and the Netherlands next weekend. Upcoming releases include the UK (July 24), Italy (September 16), and Germany (October 1).

Ted 2 made $12.4 million from 35 territories over the weekend, including a $6 million debut and #2 finish in the UK. The raunchy sequel topped the box office in Peru with a $438k debut and enjoyed a $2 opening in Poland with $573k. Germany led the holdovers with a $1.3 million #4 finish, raising its cume in the market to $7.5 million. Ted 2 has grossed a total of $53.2 million overseas and $124.8 million worldwide and still has 27 territories left on its schedule. Next week brings Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, and Vietnam.

Magic Mike XXL danced its way to a $10.3 million weekend from 3,800 screens in 30 markets. Australia opened to $4 million with 386k admissions from 401 screens. France enjoyed a $563k debut with 80k admissions from 295 screens. UK leads the holdovers with $1.6 million from 551 screens and a $6.3 million total. The film has grossed a total of $20.5 million overseas and $68.8 million globally. Upcoming key markets include Germany (July 23) and Brazil (July 30).

Insidious: Chapter 3 took $3.9 million from 1,890 screens in 50 territories. The horror film is now up to $47 million overseas and $98.6 million worldwide. South Korea enjoyed a $1.5 million debut on 368 screens, ranking 6th in the market. France opened to $945k from 245 screens, also placing 6th in the weekend chart. Top holdovers include Germany in its second weekend ($550k weekend, $1.5M cume) and Mexico in its third frame ($440k weekend, $4.5M cume).

Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed $2.9 million in its second weekend in Japan, its final overseas market in release. The ensemble superhero sequel has grossed a total of $13.5 million in the market after 9 days in release. The Avengers have grossed a total of $933.3 million overseas in their second outing, with a global cume of $1.388 billion. Top overseas performers include China ($235.5M), South Korea ($82.2M), UK ($73.6M), Mexico ($51M), and Brazil ($48.4M).

Paper Towns took a $2.4 million debut from 630 screens in Brazil, finishing its opening weekend in the market #2 in terms of admissions and #3 in gross behind Minions and Terminator: Genisys. Brazil has proven to be a formidable market for Young Adult dramas, The Fault in our Stars opened to $5.56 million last year en route to a $30.6 million run in the country. Paper Towns opens in North America on July 20.

Spy added $1.7 million over the weekend to reach a $116.4 million overseas total. The film will expand to Italy, its final market, next week. Spy has grossed $219.9 million worldwide.

The Gallows opened in 13 smaller territories, earning a combined $1.2 million. Argentina is the early leader with $442k from 79 screens. The film expands to the UK and Mexico next weekend before moving on to France, Australia, Russia, and Brazil in a couple of weeks.

Poltergeist grossed $1 million over the weekend to take its overseas total to $47.2 million. Hong Kong was the only new market, where the horror remake grossed $275k from 65 screens. Three markets are left for Poltergeist, including a South Korean release scheduled for October. Poltergeist has grossed $94.3 million globally.
