‘Moana’ Begins its Overseas Run with a Second Place Finish in China

Moana set sail in 12 overseas territories this weekend, building a $16.3 million base that lifts its global debut to $97.4 million following an $81.1 million 5-day debut in North America.

Only China stands out as a significant earner from the 16 territories that opened this weekend outside of North America. Opening on Friday, the film grossed $12.3 million over three days and was overshadowed by the $40M+ debut of fellow opener Fantastic Beasts. Despite the distant second place finish, Moana is actually the second highest three-day opener of all-time in China for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

This weekend’s other top overseas performers for the Disney film include Colombia ($700k), Indonesia ($700k), and Singapore ($600k). Moana will see its box office tally grow with a significant expansion next weekend that includes top markets such as France, Mexico, Russia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. A tiered release pattern includes Christmas weekend dates in Australia, Germany, and Italy. A trio of top markets –Brazil, Japan, and South Korea– are slated to open in Q1 2017.
