Inside Out moved into first place on Thursday with $9.48 million. Yesterday represented the second timeInside Out has led the daily box office (last Friday being the first). The critically acclaimed 3D computer animated film from Disney and Pixar was up an encouraging 1 percent over Wednesday’s performance, which represented the day’s strongest daily percentage hold among wide releases. Inside Out placed in second for the week with a much stronger than expected seven-day start of $132.82 million. That is 6 percent ahead of the $124.83 million seven-day take of 2013’s Monsters University and 21 percent behind the $167.55 million seven-day gross of 2010’s Toy Story 3.
Jurassic World was down one spot from Wednesday to place in a close second with $8.90 million. The Chris Pratt led 3D blockbuster sequel from Universal and Legendary was down 6 percent from Wednesday and down 50 percent from last Thursday. Jurassic World was the week’s top film with a weekly take of $149.63 million. That was down 49.5 percent from the film’s opening weekend performance and brings the film’s two-week total to a massive $445.84 million. Yesterday saw Jurassic World surpass the $441.23 million total gross of 2004’s Shrek 2 to move into ninth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list and by the end of the weekend the film is set to zoom into fifth place on the list.
Given how close Inside Out and Jurassic World were on Thursday (and throughout the rest of the midweek), it is likely that the two films will remain close to one another over the weekend.
Fox’s Spy held steady in third place with $1.21 million. The Melissa McCarthy led comedy fell 7 percent from Wednesday and a healthy 28 percent from last Thursday. Spy surpassed the $80 million mark yesterday and has grossed $80.55 million in three weeks. The film placed in third this week with $16.68 million, which represented a 27 percent decline from the previous week.
Warner’s San Andreas took in $0.826 million to remain in fourth. The Dwayne Johnson led 3D disaster film was down 9 percent from Wednesday and down 27 percent from last Thursday. San Andreas took fourth place this week with $12.61 million. That was down a slim 20 percent from the previous week and brings the film’s four-week total to a stronger than expected $136.60 million.
Open Road’s Dope rounded out Thursday’s top five with $0.536 million. The critically acclaimed Rick Famuyiwa directed comedy drama was down a concerning 16 percent from Wednesday. Dope placed in fifth for the week with $8.91 million. Despite strong critical reviews, Dope is performing slightly below expectations and has been fairly front-loaded throughout the week. The film is running 19 percent ahead of the $7.49 million seven-day start of last year’s Beyond the Lights.
