Studio Weekend Actuals: ‘Transformers’ Tops Domestic, Global Box Office; ‘Wonder Woman’ Edges ‘Cars 3’ for Second in Photo Finish

Monday Update: Transformers: The Last Knight led the global box office this weekend, thanks in large part to a $199.2 million overseas haul. Domestically, the film finished its first week below the $70 million mark–a difficult start considering the looming presence of Despicable Me 3 and Spider-Man: Homecoming in the coming weeks. Wonder Woman was able to pull ahead of Cars 3 in a Monday morning photo finish, grossing $831k more than the Disney Pixar sequel in its fourth frame.

Sunday Update: Transformers: The Last Knight battled its way to nearly $69.1 million this weekend (including $45.3 million over the Friday-Sunday period), making it the lowest-opening entry in the history of Michael Bay’s shape-shifting robot franchise. Meanwhile, both Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled and indie rom-com The Big Sick made major impressions in limited release.

Transformers: The Last Knight’s less-than-stellar domestic performance this weekend is especially notable when you consider that its estimated five-day take was actually less than the three-day take of the first Transformers, which opened to $70.5 million.

The Last Knight also grossed less than half of what the last film in the series, 2014’s The Age of Extinction, did in its three-day opening frame. That film brought in over $100 million over the same period three years ago.

Of course, The Last Knight’s domestic opening is only part of the story. Internationally, the fifth film in the sci-fi franchise brought in $196.2 million this weekend, an amount that includes the series’ largest-ever opening in China (a whopping $123.4 million). That’s 35% above The Age of Extinction’s $92 million opening in the country three years ago, even though that film brought in slightly more overall in overseas markets. A more detailed look of the film’s international performance can be found here

About $178 million (67%) of The Last Knight’s $265 million global take this weekend came from 3D ticket sales, while about $24.3 million came from IMAX showings. Its current global total now stands at $265.3 million.

As for holdovers, last weekend’s champ Cars 3 finished neck-and-neck with Wonder Woman for the No. 2 spot, with each grossing an estimated $25.2 million. That result is far more impressive for the latter film, given that the DC powerhouse is already in its fourth weekend as opposed to Cars 3’s second.

The photo finish represents a drop of around 53% for the Disney-Pixar threequel. That’s a better hold than the 60% drop suffered by Cars 2 in its second weekend (that film was also up against the opening of a Transformers sequel, in that case Dark of the Moon), but a far cry from the stellar 43% second-weekend drop experienced by the first Cars in 2006. Cars 3 now stands just shy of $100 million in North America.

As Pixar sequels go, the bases for comparison here are Finding Dory, Monsters University and Toy Story 2 and 3. Those films experienced healthier second-weekend drops of 46%, 44.7%, 51.6% and 46.2%, respectively, though those films were all better-loved by critics. By comparison, Cars 3 garnered only a so-so 66% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a relatively poor showing for a Pixar movie (though it was a considerable improvement over Cars 2’s 39% score).

Wonder Woman, on the other hand, continues to post strong holds. After four weeks, the film’s domestic total stands at over $318 million, with a drop of only 39% this weekend. That result puts it within striking distance of Suicide Squad’s $325 million domestic total from last summer, a benchmark it will effortlessly surpass early this week (ditto Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s $330 million total). The Patty Jenkins-directed superhero flick now stands at over $652 million worldwide.

As for last weekend’s other wide openers, the Mandy Moore shark thriller 47 Meters Down stayed afloat in impressive fashion, dropping only 33% to $7.4 million. That’s a stunning hold for this kind of movie, and even better than the 47% second-weekend drop experienced by last year’s fin-driven hit The Shallows starring Blake Lively.

Meanwhile, the surprise success of last weekend – Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me – crumbled in its second frame, dropping a massive 77.9% to $5.8 million. That puts it below 2009’s Biggie flick Notorious, which fell 71.8% in its sophomore round. Eyez’s 22% Rotten Tomatoes score certainly couldn’t have helped, even though it received an A- Cinemascore.

Speaking of poor reviews, the raunchy R-rated comedy Rough Night (48% on Rotten Tomatoes) had another rough weekend, grossing just $4.7 million in its second frame.

While Transformers: The Last Knight was the only wide opener this weekend, two specialty films made impressive debuts in limited release. The biggest winner was the critically-beloved indie rom-com The Big Sick starring Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan, which grossed $435,000 in only five locations for a whopping $87,000 per-screen average. Sofia Coppola’s Civil War Gothic The Beguiled also made a splash, grossing $240,000 in just four locations for a per-screen average of around $60,000.

The top 10 films this weekend earned an estimated $131.9 million total over the three-day frame, a 26.1 percent drop from the amount earned by the top 10 last weekend. It’s also a huge 49.9 percent drop from the top 10 on this weekend last year, when Finding Dory rode a wave of pent-up demand to a gargantuan $135 million.

Overseas Update:

Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 expanded its international test run this week in six territories, grossing $7.2 million for the weekend and $18.9 million total in Australia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. It opens in North America next Friday.

Elsewhere, The Mummy’s impressive international run slowed down this weekend, dropping 68.9 percent to $16.5 million in 69 territories for a global total of $342.1 million, with nearly 80 percent of its ticket sales coming from overseas. Wonder Woman, meanwhile, lassoed another $20.5 million in 65 territories.
