Weekend Projections: ‘Jason Bourne’ Eyes $60M Debut; ‘Bad Moms’ Breaks Out to $26.5M+; ‘Star Trek Beyond’ To Add $24M; ‘Nerve’ Pacing for $9.9M 3-Day Frame

Saturday Update: Universal reports Jason Bourne grabbed a solid $22.71 million on opening day Friday, including Thursday evening’s grosses. That figure bests the $20.3 million first day of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation on the same weekend last year, although Bourne claims significantly more lukewarm word of mouth early on (with mixed reviews to boot). Still, Matt Damon’s long awaited return to his most iconic role will easily land in first place this weekend with a projected $60 million haul.

Meanwhile, STX’s Bad Moms is turning into the breakout we’ve long expected. The R-rated comedy bowed to $9.6 million yesterday, ahead of Bridesmaids‘ $7.834 million opening day in May 2011 and not far behind Trainwreck‘s $10.74 million last summer. Moms is poised to enjoy a healthy late summer run with positive word of mouth and excellent counter-programming appeal. Opening weekend should tally around $26.5 million or higher.

Star Trek Beyond slipped almost 70 percent from opening day to $6.75 million yesterday due to the new competition from Bourne. Regardless, the film continues to enjoy positive reception and is eyeing a sophomore frame of $24 million — after which, we expect legs to begin stabilizing.

This weekend’s other opener, Nerve, added $3.2 million yesterday for a three-day total of $9.25 million since its Wednesday debut. The teen-centric thriller is enjoying healthy reception among its target crowd as it aims for a Friday-Sunday haul around $9.9 million.

Studio weekend estimates and further analysis will published on Sunday. Our initial weekend estimates are below.

Friday Report: Jason Bourne got off to a very solid start last night with an estimated $4.23 million start from shows that began at 7pm. By comparison, last year’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation — having opened on the exact same weekend — began with $4.0 million from shows starting at 8pm Thursday. Less direct of a comparison due to its release date, but still notable, is Spectre‘s $5.25 million back in November.

Meanwhile, STX Entertainment’s Bad Moms kicked off with an excellent $2.05 million last night from shows beginning at 6pm. That tops the $1.8 million earned by Trainwreck last year (shows began at 8pm), setting the stage for the newcomer studio’s biggest success to date with a film that has been on our ‘sleeper hit radar’ for months.

With last night’s start, Bad Moms has a considerable chance to upset Star Trek Beyond for the runner-up position behind Bourne this weekend, although we still expect Trek to hold well based on its healthy word of mouth following last week’s debut. Nerve, meanwhile, will continue looking to cater toward teen crowds in its first three-day frame.

Early weekend estimates for key titles based on official Friday estimates will posted Saturday morning, following by full studio estimates and analysis on Sunday.
