Twitter Futures: Harry Styles + ‘Dunkirk’ = Tweetstorm

Friday Morning Update: The trailer for Dunkirk might be long gone but the buzz surrounding One Direction’s own Harry Styles has created a huge storm on social media. Styles didn’t even feature in the first trailer but with praise coming from sources behind the film in recent weeks including acclaimed director Christopher Nolan for Styles’ acting chops Directioners (which is what fans of the band call themselves) are out in full force to support their beloved. Behind the scene set pics of Styles in particular has really helped to raise its social media visibility which is not surprising when you consider that One Direction’s Twitter account is followed by 30 million people, making them some of the most followed people on the planet. Its 136,105 tweets on the week was more than four times the nearest competitor. Interstellar wasn’t even in the top 50 films the same distance before release and that is no doubt where Dunkirk would be now if not for Styles. Having very popular singers crossover to Hollywood is hardly something new, but the curious combination of a pop culture sensation such as Styles coupled with arguably the most talented director in the business and a highly anticipated original film makes for great buzz and speculation.

Outside of Dunkirk it was largely barren on Twitter over the past week, a familiar occurrence for the first full week of September. The major Fall releases have yet to gain significant traction on the service yet which is in stark contrast to last year when Star Wars: The Force Awakens was already dominating the charts.
